Tunnel Repair Begins on CO I-70

The crack was first noticed during a routine inspection in July of 2006. In February of 2007, water began leaking from the crack. According to the Aspen Times News, the eastbound bore was closed to all traffic in late March.

The fix will involve leaving the existing cracked slab in place, and drilling holes in it for additional reinforcement. A new slab will be poured above the cracked slab, and some sort of reinforcement will be added below the cracked slab to create a "sandwich" fix. I’m a little confused about the details, but in the ENR article it sounds like there will be excavation occurring above the cracked slab. At any rate, the construction is slated to last through October.
