Discussing channel degradation of Missouri River in Kansas City - Associated PressA forthcoming draft study by the Army Corps of Engineers will hopefully shed light on an ongoing problem of stream bed degradation along the Missouri River. Portions of the river in Kansas City have dropped in elevation by 12-ft over the past 50-years requiring up to $4 million in improvements to pumps and water infrastructure to get drinking water from the river. A bigger concern to geotechnical engineers is the potential impact on bridge piers and levees. (Photo by Associated Press)

The causes of the degradation are not clear, but theories include upstream dams reducing the sediment coming downstream, efforts to channel the river, dredging, floods and other natural processes. Perhaps more details will surface in the draft Corps report.
