Joseph A. Sopko, Ph.D., P.E., joins Moretrench to head up new Midwest office

New regional manager for Midwest operations of Moretrench

New regional manager for Midwest operations of Moretrench Moretrench is pleased to announce that Joseph A. Sopko, Ph.D., P.E., has joined the company as Regional Manager for its Midwest operations. Strategically located just north of Milwaukee in Port Washington, Wisconsin, the new office will offer the full range of Moretrench’s technologies to the Milwaukee, Chicago, Detroit and St. Louis areas. These include dewatering and groundwater control, ground freezing, earth retention and excavation support, deep foundations, underpinning systems, grouting systems and environmental remediation.

A 1980 graduate of Michigan State University with a B.S. in Civil Engineering, Dr. Sopko earned his Master’s degree in 1983 and was awarded a doctorate in 1990, both also from Michigan State.

Dr. Sopko brings more than 30 years of geotechnical construction experience to his position, specifically in the design and construction of frozen earth structures for excavation support and groundwater control. Over the course of his career, he has been instrumental in the successful completion of a number of significant projects. Of particular note are mass freezing under Boston’s historic Russia Wharf to permit construction of the Silver Line twin tunnels, and peripheral freezing into bedrock for temporary earth support and groundwater control for construction of the 200-foot deep Bushwick Shaft 20B, part of the ongoing New York City Water Tunnel No.3 system. The ground freezing operation was instituted after the originally designed slurry wall support failed.

“Joe’s extensive knowledge of local construction markets, coupled with his many years of industry experience, ensures that our Midwest clients will receive the highest level of service and production quality. We welcome him on board, and look forward to a long and productive relationship.”
