The cover story for Tunnel Boring Magazine’s April 2011 issue is about the Aero-train tunnel at Dulles Airport that has recently celebrated it’s first year of operation. There are 3 miles of tunnels that guide the trains under the airport; 7,700 track feet (tf) of cut-and-cover tunnel, 3,650 tf of NATM tunnel and 4,300 tf of TBM tunnel. In the mountains of Peru a tunnel-boring machine named “Pacha Mama†is grinding through the heart of the Andes under rock as deep as 6,890 ft. It is carving away at a 20.2-kilometer-long tunnel through the South American Continental Divide to deliver water to arid coastal farmland.
This is a really interesting project, known as the Los Olmos project, and a nice little article. Normally for a civil tunnel project you drill geotechnical holes beforehand to know what kind of material you’re dealing with. In this case, because of the depth, they don’t have that luxury, so all decisions will be made on the fly. The depth of the tunnel creates some very challenging rock mechanics and logistics problems as well! (Illustration by Odebrecht)
The “breakthrough” media event for CALTRANS’ Devil’s Slide Tunnel project was this past Friday. A large crowd of politicians, news crews and locals were on hand as a road-header broke through a shotcrete face in a ceremony to mark the completion of the excavation portion of the first of two tunnels. It will still be over a year until the tunnels are opened to traffic. The second tunnel is expected to breakthrough as early as this week. (Photo by SFGate.com)
