Drillers target earthquake zone

Drillers and researchers are attempting to drill up to 7km into an active earthquake zone off the coast of Japan. The  Nankai Trough Seismogenic Zone is at a subduction zone boundary and is thought to be near the epicenter of two 8+ magnitude earthquakes in 1944 and 1946. The total cost of the experiment is on the order of hundreds of millions of dollars. Check out the article at BBC News.
