April 1, 2014 Chilean Earthquake Location

A magnitude 8.2 earthquake struck off the coast of Chile late Tuesday. The damage estimates will probably begin rolling in today, but early indications are that it could have been much worse. Some 5 people have been killed in the early figures. There have been reports of landslides and disruption of communication facilities. A tsunami warning was triggered, and there are warnings of high water levels and strong currents impacting Hawaii, but so far no reports of a major tsunami along the Chilean coast. [Source: CNN.com. Highway 530 Mudslide east of Arlington on Sunday March 23, 2014

A massive mudslide occurred on Saturday in Snohomish County, about 30 miles north northeast of Seattle, east of Arlington in the town of Oso. It has killed 8 people and at least 12 are still missing. 30 homes were destroyed and a mile long stretch of HIghway 530 is buried under approximately 20 feet of mud and debris. Rescuers initially heard voices of survivors, but have not heard any voices since Saturday night. My heart goes out to the families of the victims. We will have more details as they become available. Birds-eye view of Corvette Sinkhole

I heard that Hayward Baker was working on the Corvette Museum sinkhole at GeoCongress, but I finally got official confirmation via this Civil Engineering Magazine article. It's a great article if you are interested in the engineering that's been going on since the sinkhole collapsed and swallowed 8 Corvettes. So far, Hayward Baker has installed 23 micropiles around the structure to depths of 75 to 220 feet depth according to the article. They are still trying to recover the remaining cars before a plan is formulated for shoring up the museum. They might use more micropiles, or they could go another way and fill up the sinkhole with low mobility grout. Whatever they decide to do, you can bet I will report on it! Corvette rescued from sinkhole

Here is an update on the Corvette Museum Sinkhole. A contractor has been busy trying to extract some of the priceless Corvettes from the sinkhole that opened up under the museum floor. If you missed the videos of this sinkhole, you have to check it out.

They have successfully removed 5 of the cars. They have been put on display in another part of the museum, with sinkhole mud still on them. But it sounds as if General Motors will be stepping in to help restore them. A video below gives more details on the Corvette rescue. I'm still waiting for official word on some of the geotechnical work being done to stabilize the museum, but haven't come across anything yet. I have heard unofficial that a geotechnical contractor has been working on the site.

Sinkhole swallows Corvettes in Bowling Green, Kentucky

A 40 foot diameter sinkhole 30 feet deep opened up beneath the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky, and swallowed 8 of the Corvettes on display. The museum's security company alerted the staff members that the motion sensors had gone off at about 5:40 am on February 12 in the 'SkyDome' portion of the museum, separate from the main building. The museum called in a structural engineer and some Karst sinkhole experts who used a remote controlled helicopter to get photos and video inside the sinkhole. See those videos below. The main museum will be open as usual tomorrow, but the SkyDome will be closed indefinitely. [Source: NYTimes.com. Image: National Corvette Museum via NYTimes.com]

Giant Boulder Smashes Through Italian Farm PDF Print E-mail

A giant boulder smashes through a barn of an Italian farmhouse

An Italian farmer and his family had an unbelievably close call with some house-sized boulders. You have to see the pictures to believe it. The boulders were dislodged during a landslide on January 21 in Northern Italy. One of the boulders smashed through the barn and courtyard of the farm and cut a swath through their vineyard before stopping near a boulder from some previous rockfall / landslide event. That older boulder is even bigger, about the same size as the entire farmhouse and big enough to be seen on Google Earth! See below or download the KMZ file.

A photo of a rusted out pipe taken during a TCEQ inspection of a dam. This picture is now used in dam safety workshops presented by TCEQ.

Nearly 3,000 dams in Texas will be exempt from inspection, including 216 that are rated as high hazard. This is thanks to a Texas State law passed earlier this year meant to lessen the burden on private dam owners in rural parts of the state.
