Hawk Rock Subsidence Feature 2004 - 2008 Interferogram

The Arizona Department of Water Resources has an excellent program to monitor a somewhat unique geologic hazard - land subsidence. Caused by compaction of valley sediments in areas of declining groundwater table, it can create significant problems for infrastructure such as drainage facilities, flood control works, and gravity flow utilities such as sewer lines. It can also induce a secondary geologic hazard, earth fissures. The ADWR has been using InSAR data supplemented with GPS surveying and other data since 1997 to monitor a number of land subsidence areas in Arizona. Crux Subsurface employees drilling geotechnical holes for the US 89 landslide investigation

Specialty drilling contractor Crux Subsurface recently completed geotechnical drilling for Kleinfelder at the site of a large landslide near Page, Arizona. Crux completed 17 holes to depths up to 250 feet using a combination of track-mounted and helicopter-moved drill rigs. Optical/acoustical downhole imaging was provided in three borings, and inclinometers were installed in seven borings. ADOT produced the following video showing parts of the geotechnical investigation.

Water rushes into the Carey Tunnel (previously the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel)

The Geotechnical Extreme Events Reconnaissance or GEER group funded by the NSF puts experts on the ground in the aftermath of natural disasters to collect geotechnical data that can used in case studies and ultimately drive the development of many of the empirical procedures used in geoengineering practice. The report for Hurricane Sandy that struck the eastern coast of the US in October of 2012 was released several months ago. The document presents the observations made by the GEER team several days after the storm struck. There are many maps, photos and figures that illustrate the devastating effect of the storm on all types of infrastructure. A landslide severed an oil pipeline in Ecuador on May 31, 2013.

This is definitely a sad story, and one that highlights the importance of an adequate geological investigation when designing pipelines. A landslide cause a rupture in the Trans-Equador oil pipeline on May 31st. The volume of oil released is on the order of 11,500 barrels, or 205,000 liters. In 2009, an unfortunate earthquake near L'Aquila, Italy caused the death of 309 people. The Italian authorities decided that a group of some six expert geoprofessionals were guilty of manslaughter for failing to predict the earthquake and providing false assurances of safety to the public. There were just a few sentences in this article/blog post about landslide insurance. Most geoprofessionals realize that home-owners insurance does not cover landslides, floods or most other geologic hazards. But what I found interesting in this article was a quote from an insurance agent that gave a rough estimate of the cost of "very rare" landslide insurance. He gave an estimate of $1,000 per year for a $300,000 house. I'm sure it depends on lots of factors, but at least that could get you in the ballpark. [Source: Central Illinois Proud. Sinkhole in Florida opens overnight, swallows and kills man PDF Print E-mail

Geophysical surveys being conducted to determine the extent of the sinkhole at the house of Jeff BushThis is a horrible and tragic story.  A sinkhole opened overnight on Thursday of last week underneath the bedroom of 36 year-old Jeff Bush in Hillsborough County, Florida. The man was swallowed by the sinkhole, pulling him down at least 20 feet.  The man’s brother attempted to save him, but was not successful and had to be rescued by firefighters himself. Local officials had geophysical surveys performed to determine the size of the sinkhole and evaluate the hazard posed to rescuers and other nearby houses.  The sinkhole was determined to pose a serious risk, and some residents were required to leave their homes, some being given only 30 minutes to clear out their things.

The latest estimates are that the sinkhole is up to 50 feet deep and 30 feet wide and still growing.  The latest bit of news indicated that the local officials have called off the effort to recover the body of the victim and have begun to demolish the house.  My thoughts and prayers go out to the victim and his friends and family.  The accounts of the brother are horrifying, and now the poor family must come to grips that this sinkhole will be his final resting place.

US89DrillingYouTubeThumbSince I last posted about this landslide, ADOT has added several videos to their YouTube channel.  It’s clear that this highway is going to be closed for the long term.  ADOT and their on-call geotechnical consultant tasked with this project, Kleinfelder, are currently drilling boreholes to attempt to characterize the failure surface and determine what the geometry of the failure surface is.  They are installing at least 10 inclinometers to try to determine the location of the slip plane or planes at depth and they have two extensometers to measure if any additional movement occurs.  They are also performing LIDAR surveys as well. Check out the videos below.

The National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI) has released a new standard regarding testing, categorization and remediation of pyritic backfill materials. These materials have finely disseminated reactive pyrite within the material, typically from quarry waste. The material was commonly used as fill beneath houses in 2005 - 2007 and has been known to heave and swell. There were so many affected properties that an Irish new home warranty provider, Home Bond, withdrew coverage prompting a government investigation. The NCE article estimates that some 12,000 homes are at risk, and only 1,100 have been remediated. Bitter Springs Landslide on US 89 south of Page, Arizona on February 20, 2013Sometime before 5am on February 20, a landslide occurred on US 89, about 25 miles south of Page, Arizona near the town of Bitter Springs. The area is known as the Echo Cliffs, and is close to the area where adventurous folks put in on white-water rafting expeditions down the Colorado River. The landslide has closed the highway, resulting in a 45 mile, 1-hour detour to get between Flagstaff and Page. The geoblogosphere has lit up over this landslide, and the best coverage has been on the Arizona Geology Blog, run by the AZ State Geologist himself.  A summary of some of his coverage is listed below. The likely geologic unit that is causing the problems is the Petrified Forrest Member of the Chinle Formation, a Triassic-aged unit that weathers into some pretty high-plasticity clay and has been known to cause slope problems all around the State. ADOT’s geotechnical engineers and geologists are looking at the site, and one of their on-call geotechnical consultants has been tasked with the emergency project to design a geotechnical repair to get the road re-opened. I was hoping it would be my employer, Golder Associates (not affiliated with GeoPrac) that would get the nod, but it wasn’t our turn in the rotation I guess.
