Russian domed city would hold 100,000 people in Siberian diamond mine pit

Proposed dome development in the Mir diamond mine, Siberia

This development dubbed ‘Eco-city 2020’ would be located in the abandoned pit for the Mir diamond mine in Siberia. You might have seen pictures of this pit before as it is one of ‘7 Amazing Holes‘ from a previous popular GeoPrac post (although it incorrectly places the pit in Serbia). The hole is over 1,700-ft deep, and 3,900-ft in diameter. That would be an impressive dome structure, but I can’t imagine it ever getting built.

The new city is planned to be divided in 3 main levels with a vertical farm, forests, residences, and recreational areas. One of the most interesting aspects of the proposal is the glass dome that will protect the city and would be covered by photovoltaic cells that will harvest enough solar energy for the new development.
