VCU_Childrens_HospitalPITTSBURGH, PA – February 5, 2013 – Nicholson Construction was recently awarded the geotechnical work for the new Children’s Pavilion at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) by Skanska Building, USA.

The $168 million, 640,000 square-foot facility will house 72 exam rooms, a surgical area with two operating rooms, and two procedure rooms, areas for diagnostic testing, imaging and laboratory services. Construction also includes an attached parking garage with more than 600 spaces.

The new Children’s Pavilion will make Children’s Hospital of Richmond the largest and most advanced outpatient facility dedicated to children in the region.

The first phase of Nicholson’s work involves the installation of 167 micropiles to underpin the existing parking garage structure. The micropiles were designed by Schnabel Engineering to resist compression, tension and lateral loads. The second phase is a design-build support of excavation solution that includes the installation of a permanent anchored soldier beam and lagging wall with 45,000 square feet of exposed wall face. The bottom of the adjacent excavation will reach a depth of 55 feet.

“Urban development projects like the Children’s Pavilion at VCU really allow us to use our expertise,” said Chris Hynes, President, Nicholson Construction. “We are able to provide customized design/build solutions for complex issues in difficult ground conditions. We’re pleased to be able to bring these types of solutions to the VCU project.”

Nicholson’s sister company, SolData, will be installing real-time monitoring technology on the hospital’s existing structures and the anchored shoring system. The monitoring program includes inclinometers, extensometers, and SolData’s patented use of automatic monitoring total stations, known as the CYCLOPS system.

“It’s always a pleasure for us to work alongside one of our sister companies,” said SolData General Manager, Boris Caro Vargas. “We’re excited to be part of this project and to support Nicholson’s excavation works with our instrumentation and monitoring.”

Nicholson and SolData are both part of Soletanche Bachy, an internationally renowned leader in geotechnical contracting.
