This project video seems a few years old, but it’s relatively new on YouTube and it’s a fantastic case study of the slick method of installing groundwater interception trenches using DeWind’s remarkable one-pass trenching technology. Hill Air Force Base in Utah had been using jet fuel ignited on a mock aircraft to train firefighters. The jet fuel had leached into the soil and was reaching the shallow aquifer. The DeWind technology was used to install a drainage trench to intercept the contaminated groundwater and pump it out for treatment before it reached the aquifer. This approach was several million dollars less costly than other alternatives they looked at. Project staff considered this method more likely to intercept the contamination than discrete wells spaced along the same alignment. [Source: DeWind YouTube. Image: YouTube]

Video: Rockslide on U.S. Highway 64 in Tennessee
Amazing video of a rockslide as it happened yesterday along U.S. Highway 64 in the Ocoee River gorge in Tennessee. TDOT crews had almost finished removing rockslide debris from an event earlier in the day when a second slide occurred, blocking the road again. That looks like a pretty planar joint set dipping right into the roadway and everything was wet from the recent rains. Click through for the video.
Video: Freeport Maine Culvert Failure and Road Collapse
A colleague of mine sent me an amazing video of a culvert failure and subsequent road collapse in Freeport Maine during a storm. The culvert was unable to accommodate the high volume of water, and it was backing up behind the roadway embankment like a dam, and spilling out onto the roadway. In a span of about 3 minutes, the entire section of road collapsed and was washed downstream. I don’t know the exact date the video was taken, but it appears to be in August of 2008.
