Retaining Wall Collapse on I-295 Project in Bellmawr, New Jersey

An MSE Retaining Wall suffered a dramatic failure last week closing the right northbound lanes of I-295 indefinitely. The wall is part of the Direct Connection Project to reduce congestion on I-295/I-76/Route 42 in Bellmawr, Mt. Ephraim and Gloucester City in Camden County, New Jersey. The failure will be a setback in the construction project that has spanned three contracts, beginning in 2013. The wall can be seen bulging and sagging in photos and video, and MSE panels are badly misaligned. The NJDOT press release announcing the closure of the right northbound lane of I-295 simply states that the wall “has shifted and partially collapsed” and that “NJDOT is developing a plan to stabilize the wall and will continue to monitor the situation.”
