Happy Belated Terzaghi Day! Every October 2, the geotechnical community remembers Karl Terzaghi on his birthday to commemorate his contributions to our profession and to civil engineering in general. This year, the Geo-Institute of ASCE is celebrating in a unique way. They are hosting a live stream event with Sergei Terzaghi, a civil engineer with Arup, as he reflects on his career and how his grandfather’s work has influenced him! The live stream begins at 3 pm EDT today, October 4, 2021.
A document entitled “Engineering and Geology Practice Guidelines” has been prepared by the JTFAP or Joint Task Force on Areas of Practice. The JFTAP was comprised of representatives from The American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG), the Association of Environmental and Engineering Geologists (AEG) and the Geo-Institute (G-I) of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). A draft of the document was published in February of 2009 and members of AEG have already been providing comments to their board through the Section Chairs for possible revisions to the document or for opinions on whether or not AEG should adopt it. A recent email to AEG Members from the President of AEG, Mark Molinari, indicates that the G-I has released the document to their membership for review and comments. Read on for more info.
The Geo-Institute of the ASCE has made some changes to their online services. For starters, they have now posted online versions of the Geo-Strata magazine. The only catch is you have to be a member to read them. Additionally, they now have a blog with an associated RSS news feed. If you don’t use RSS feeds, you can always head over to our Outside News and Blogs page where we have already incorporated this new blog’s feed into our aggregated news.
