RockMass Tool for Digital Underground Mapping

Lithos software by RockMass Technologies

Mapping rock mass structure is a key part of hard rock tunneling and underground mining. There have been a plethora of technological advances in 3D mapping and rock mass data extraction, but few are more impressive than the tools from RockMass Technologies.

Founded in 2016 by Shelby Yee, Matthew Gubasta, and Stuart Bourne, RockMass Technologies was built on research done at Queens University to implement hand-held lidar tools and workflows for rock face and back scanning and mapping. In 2021, Yee and Gubasta were awarded a 30 under 30 award from Forbes Magazine.

Their platform allows for 3D scanning and mapping of structure orientations from the 3D data, immediate visualization of the data collected on the tablet, sharing of the information with other team members, and seamless export to a variety of tools used by professionals, including Rocscience, Seequent Leapfrog, ITASCA, and others. It looks very impressive.
