The international rock mechanics and engineering geology community has lost a great figure in Prof. Paul Marinos of the University of Athens. Prof. Marinos passed away last Sunday according to the International Association for Engineering Geology (IAEG) where Marinos was a past president from 1994 to 1998. In my own geotechnical practice, I am most familiar with his work with Evert Hoek to create and refine the Geologic Strength Index or GSI system of rock mass classification. My condolences go to Prof. Marinos’ family, friends, colleagues, and students.
