Bentley 2021 YII Geotechnical Award Finalists

Every year Bentley celebrates the best in the construction industry with the Year in Infrastructure (YII) Awards. The finalists in the geotechnical category have been announced, and project videos are scheduled to launch very soon. Be sure to go read more about these amazing projects, but without further ado, the nominees for the 2021 YII Geotechnical Award are:

CHINA WATER RESOURCES BEIFANG INVESTIGATION, DESIGN AND RESEARCH CO. LTD.

Geological Survey of Water Conservancy and Hydropower Engineering

Location: Tibet, China

Local officials undertook a water conservancy initiative to improve the water supply and the ecological environment in Tibet. The survey and design team faced challenging environmental conditions and a tight construction period, and they needed to move beyond traditional methods. They created a geological digital twin to save costs, cut survey time in half, and enhance project management.

RESEARCH CENTER OF CONSTRUCTION – GERSEVANOV RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF BASES AND UNDERGROUND STRUCTURES (NIIOSP)

Geotechnical Aspects of the Moscow Luzhniki Stadium Reconstruction

Location: Moscow, Russia

Originally built in the 1950s, the Moscow Luzhniki Stadium needed reconstruction to become an elite-category facility for year-round football. Though the design team wanted to keep the heritage façade, they had to address geotechnical issues, including soil compaction and existing utilities. They created a 3D model to analyze the soil and simulate the impact of reconstruction, which improved construction and reduced costs.

ROYAL HASKONINGDHV

Moondrian – A Digital Solution for Soil Investigation

Location: Netherlands

Royal Haskoning sought to automate and digitalize ground data management and interpretation using a visual 3D model, as manual, 2D soil tests were time-consuming and error-prone. They used Bentley applications as the foundation for their innovative Moondrian software platform, which provides better access to data in a 3D environment. Moondrian cuts project time and maximizes data value.
