American Society of Testing Materials Logo - ASTM GeoPrac’s monthly update on ASTM standards. There are a bunch of updates to C series for concrete, including standards for making and curing specimens in the field, shotcrete specs, and a handfull of geosynthetic and geomembrrane standards have been reapproved. Geosyntec Chairman Emeritus J.P. Giroud, Ph.D., was elected to the 2009 class of the National Academy of Engineering.

Geosyntec Consultants is pleased to announce that Jean-Pierre Giroud, Ph.D., Chairman Emeritus of the firm, has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), one of the very highest professional distinctions given to an engineer. His election citation reads: “For pioneering research in geosynthetics engineering and its practical application in civil/geotechnical engineering.”

Katrina levee failure with Chinook Helicopter attmpting to fill the breach Wet spots have been detected along a portion of a new levee being constructed by a US Army Corps of Engineers Contractor. The levee is approximately 95% complete, but the Levee Board wants to establish what is causing the apparent seepage before accepting the levee. More after the break. The Microsoft Virtual Earth 3D team has released a tool that allows you to semi-automatically position a photo in 3D space. I wrote an article about how to geotag your photos, which results in photos with latitude and longitude written to the EXIF headers of the image. Programs like RoboGeo also support the direction of the camera, but this tool goes quite a bit further to fully orient your photo in 3D space. Click through for more info.
