Hawthorne, NJ (December 27, 2012): Elections for the Deep Foundations Institute 18-member Board of Trustees were held in advance of the 2012 Annual Conference and Members’ Meeting.

Incumbent trustees elected to additional terms include: James A. Morrison, manager, Kiewit Engineering; Rudolph P. Frizzi, P.E., GE, Senior Principal at Langan Engineering and Environmental Services; and Patrick Bermingham, CEO of Bermingham Foundation Solutions Inc., each elected for a fourth three-year term, and Matthew Janes, P.Eng., M.E.Sc., MBA, senior engineer at Isherwood; Arturo Ressi di Cervia, special projects executive at Kiewit and a Foundation and Geotechnical consultant; and James O. Johnson, executive vice president of Condon-Johnson & Associates, Inc., each elected for a second three-year term.

Hawthorne, NJ (December 27, 2012): Patrick Bermingham, CEO of Bermingham Foundation Solutions, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, was awarded the Ben C. Gerwick Award for Innovation in Design and Construction of Marine Foundations at a dinner in early December at the DFI Marine Foundation Seminar in Norfolk, Va. The annual award recognizes innovative excellence in the design and construction of marine foundations, and honors Ben C. Gerwick for his achievements during his 62-year career in the field of marine foundations. The award is sponsored by the Deep Foundation Institute Educational Trust, University of California Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and the Ben C. Gerwick Company.

Inside the Devil's Slide tunnel construction, by kxyoung on FlickrThe Devil’s Slide Tunnel Project was originally scheduled to open at the end of 2012, but it has been delayed slightly to an early 2013 opening. If you look at some recent photos, you can hardly tell that there is anything left to finish. I’ve been following this project since it started, since to me it represents the essence of geoengineering, with important roles played by geotechnical engineers, geological engineers, hydrogeologists, and of course geotechnical contractors and tunneling specialists.  I thought it would be interesting to list a few of the posts I’ve written about the project over the years and present a bit of information I only recently learned.  Click through for more.
