Geotechnical engineering firm, S&ME, was awarded a 2019 Grand Conceptor award from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) for their Surcharge Program at the new Novo Nordisk Diabetes Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (DAPI) Project in Clayton, North Carolina. The original foundation design concept at the $2 billion (USD) facility included a combination of deep foundation elements and ground improvement. S&ME evaluated the previous geotechnical design and provided a new field and laboratory investigation program to design the surcharging program, which included an instrumented monitoring program. The program resulted in the elimination of 4,600 piles, saving the project over $14 million in construction costs.
