Those of us in the geotechnical profession use ASTM Standards on a daily basis. It’s hard to keep up with changes, so I attempt to post regular digest updates to the ASTM standards of importance to geotechnical engineers and lab managers, etc. This list focuses on standards tagged by ASTM as geotechnical, as well as geosynthetics, and work items for Committees D18 and D35 (Soil and Rock, and Geosynthetics, respectively).

American Society of Testing Materials Logo - ASTMOur monthly update on new and revised ASTM standards that relate to geotechnical engineering, materials testing, hydrogeology, geosynthetics and related disciplines. This month there are a few notable revisions, including D1452 for Auger Borings, D3385 for Double-Ring Infiltrometer and D4595 for determining tensile properties of geotextiles by the wide-width strip method. 22nd April 2013, Redditch, UK – Keynetix are pleased to announce that an upgrade to KeyLAB has been released today that includes a number of new features requested by users to help them manage their geotechnical and concrete laboratory. The new build expands the functionality of the system to assist laboratory managers who are conducting concrete testing, working in a NATA accredited laboratory or with the ASTM standards and is available free of charge to all users who have an in-date maintenance agreement.

As well as the new features in this release, KeyLAB have produced a large number of free test definitions and input and report sheets for companies who are implementing KeyLAB within a laboratory, conducting tests to BS or ASTM standards. These worksheets and reports have been designed by Peter Keeton from Keynetix, who has over 30 years experience of managing large geotechnical laboratories.

American Society of Testing Materials Logo - ASTMThis post contains a summary of geotechnical, materials testing, geosynthetic and related testing standards that were updated by ASTM during the month of September. This month there were not as many updates as the last couple, but a few that caught my eye are a new standard for measuring geosynthetic-soil resilient interface shear stiffness, a revision to the standard practice for laboratories testing concrete and concrete aggregates for use in construction and criteria for laboratory evaluation and a revision to the standard for measuring slump flow of self-consolidating concrete.
