It can be used to reduce vertical loads to control settlement or to reduce lateral loads on bridge abutments or other structures. The Pacific Street Bridge Project in Omaha, Nebraska is one project that used geofoam for both of these purposes. There is nothing funny about landslides, particularly when you consider the tremendous loss of life that happens all the time around the world, most recently in Taiwan, China, Sierra Leone and elsewhere.
