And a train was actually hit! Fortunately it was stationary on the tracks, but it crushed the side panel of the driver’s carriage. Neither the driver nor any passengers were injured in the incident. The drill rig was drilling to install ground source heating or geothermal heating for a hotel when at a depth of 20 to 25 meters (65 to 82-ft), the drillers noticed that they lost resistance when they punched through the subway tunnel. Historic Pennsylvania Tunnel Reopens with Help From NCFI’s TerraThane Polyurethane Foam
MOUNT AIRY, NC—A $2 million tunnel construction project on the Great Alleghany Passage (GAP) is reopened to the public with help from a geotechnical polyurethane foam called TerraThane, by US company, NCFI Polyurethanes.
The GAP rail-trail is 150 miles of hiking and biking between Cumberland, Md, and Pittsburgh, Pa. created along the former railway line. In Cumberland, the GAP joins the C&O Canal Towpath, creating a continuous 335-mile long trail experience all the way to Washington, DC. It’s become a favorite biking destination for people from around the Mid-Atlantic states. One of its main tunnels, the Pinkerton Tunnel, an 849-foot former Western Maryland Railway tunnel, has been closed since 1975 due to erosion and unstable conditions. The Allegheny Trail Alliance, the organization that built and now maintains the 150-mile GAP, and the Somerset County Rails-to-Trails Association (SCRTA), wanted the tunnel reopened and helped fund the project.

Devil’s Slide Tunnel Construction Kicks Off
On September 17, CALTRANS and Kiewit Pacific held a "tunnel excavation celebration" to kick off the start of tunnel construction on The Devil’s Slide Tunnels project on California State Route 1 (the Pacific Coast Highway) in San Mateo County between the town of Montara to the south and the city of Pacifica to the north. The project involves the creation of a separated two-lane road, one lane in each direction. This road will pass through twin tunnels, over twin bridges and connect with an existing non-separated two-lane road at each end. The new road will be approximately 6,500 feet long, made up of the roughly 4,000-foot twin tunnels, the 1,500-foot north approach road (which includes the 1000-foot parallel bridges), and the 1,000-foot south approach road. Upon completion, the new road will bypass geologically unstable portions of existing Route 1, sections of roadway subject to lengthy closures, high maintenance costs over the years, and risk of permanent failure. Nicholson Awarded a Contract on the MTA’s Second Avenue Subway Project
PITTSBURGH, PA – January 18, 2010 – Nicholson was recently awarded a subcontract by E.E. Cruz and Tully Construction Co., a Joint Venture that includes approximately 200,000 SF of diaphragm walls for the construction of the 96th Street station box as part of New York City’s Second Avenue Subway project. Nicholson’s contract also includes jet grouting for a subgrade strut, water cutoff, and temporary support of excavation; compensation grouting for two buildings at excavations for ancillary structures; micropiles within an existing building; and curtain grouting in rock.
