UC Berkley GeoEngineering Lectures on YouTube

UC Berkley has a bunch of lectures online, including three geoengineering themed ones. It appears that they were all from lectures given as a part of the 27th Annual GeoEngineering Distinguished Lecture Series on May 8, 2009. So if you have an hour plus to kill per lecture (and I haven’t yet), you can check out one of the following.

Your New Field PC – A Rugged Tablet from Trimble?

Rugged Tablet PC, the Trimble YumaLast week, GPS technology company Trimble announced a new rugged tablet PC that they appear to be targeting at a variety of industries and market sectors. The Yuma is billed as having an ingress protection rating of 67 (6=dust tight; 7= protection against effects of immersion from 15cm to 1m). It also comes with integrated GPS (naturally), 2 integrated cameras (nice for geotagging), WiFi b/g and 7″ sunlight readable touchscreen display. I can see this gadget being useful for GIS professionals, geologists mapping in the field, and anyone keeping an inventory of things in the field. Its sort of like a netbook for field guys! More details after the break. (Photo by Trimble)

Photo 3D Geocoding Tool for Virtual Earth

The Microsoft Virtual Earth 3D team has released a tool that allows you to semi-automatically position a photo in 3D space. I wrote an article about how to geotag your photos, which results in photos with latitude and longitude written to the EXIF headers of the image. Programs like RoboGeo also support the direction of the camera, but this tool goes quite a bit further to fully orient your photo in 3D space. Click through for more info. Geotechnical engineers who encounter MSE retaining walls or Mechanically Stabilzed Earth Walls are undoubtedly familiar with the FHWA NHI manual on “Mechanically Stabilized Earth Walls and Reinforced Soil Slopes”. This manual, along with the NCMA manual that is used for non-transportation projects, is virtually the bible for MSE wall design. In late summer/early fall of 2009, a revised version of this manual will hit the streets. Read on for more details.
