Fortunately nobody was seriously injured as a drilled shaft rig toppled over at a construction site in Maroochydore, Queensland, Australia. No word on what caused the accident at the building site. The operator was inside the cab at the time and suffered minor bruises. The article mentioned that the mast of the rig landed in between two other pieces of equipment and fell on an area that was occupied by a group of workers just moments earlier. Update on Landmark Kansas City Bridge Project – kcICON
Another nice post from Robert Thompson with Dan Brown and Associates (DBA) about the geotechnical work on the kcICON project. They are the geotechnical designers for a $245 million project that will involve a new cable-stayed bridge over the Missouri River in downtown Kansas City along the I-29/35 corridor. In his post, Robert gives an update on the status of the work including the borings and recent test shaft installation and testing as well as an update on the overall project. Drilled Shaft Rig Topples in Austin, Texas [Video]
An excavator mounted drill rig drilling shafts as part of a project to pass utilities under I-35 near 51st Street toppled over while trying to move in soft, rain soaked soil. The Austin Fire Department was able to extract the operator from the cab and he was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries, a minor miracle. I’m not sure what the purpose of the drilled shafts were for. Since the project was for some kind of utility pipe jacking under the freeway, I’m speculating it was drilling holes for temporary shoring for the jacking pit or something along those lines. I’m sure OSHA will be looking into the incident. Video news story after the break. (Photo from Austin KXAN.com).
