Hawthorne, NJ (December 1, 2012): Co-authors Dr. John McCartney and Kyle Murphy, professors at the University of Colorado Boulder, shared honors as winners of the DFI Young Professor Paper Competition award presented at the DFI 37th Annual Conference on Deep Foundations in October in Houston. The paper, “Seasonal Strain Distributions in Full-Scale Energy Foundations,” focuses on the seasonal thermo-mechanical response of two energy foundations installed at the new Denver Housing Authority Senior Living Facility.

Foundations and Geotechnical Engineering for the Burj Dubai – World’s Tallest Building

Foundations for the Burj Dubai - The raft slab on top of 192 pile foundations The Burj Dubai Tower has recently reached it’s final height of 818m (2,684-ft or almost exactly 1/2 a mile!). The foundation system for the Burj Dubai is comprised of 192 bored piles (drilled shafts in my practice) 1.5-m (approximately 5-ft) in diameter and approximately 50-m deep (164-ft). A 3.7-m (12-ft) thick raft foundation sits on top of the piles under the full footprint of the structure. (Image from BurjDubaiSkyscraper.com)

Innovative Foundation System for London Office Building

Cannon Place office building in London This has to be one of the most complex geotechnical engineering problems I’ve heard of for a building, if not for any kind of project. For starters, beneath the proposed 10-story office building referred to as Cannon Place lies the Cannon Street Train Station built in 1868. Also beneath the site are walls and foundations of a Roman Governor’s palace. In order to accommodate these features, the building has 21-m cantilevers at each end, with the load bearing happening over two groupings of columns at the 1/3 points. In section it looks quite like a 3-span bridge…without the abutments and stacked 10-stories tall! More after the break. (Images by New Civil Engineer) […]
